Minerals:-

In plants and animals the inorganic elements are present in the form of minerals and non-minerals carbon(c), Hydrogen (H), Oxygen(O) and nitrogen (N) are non-mineral. Structurally, excepting some of these minerals, the rest are collectively found in the form of salt. plants and animals contains various types of minerals but not all of them are essential for their growth and development. On the basis of their requirement, minerals can be divided into categories:

  • Essential minerals
  • Non-Essential minerals

Essential minerals:-

The minerals which are highly significant for the normal growth and development of an organism are called essential minerals. The minerals play a direct role in the structure and metabolic activities of the organism. The absence for deficient of these minerals in an organism produces disorders which can only be cured by the sufficient supply of that specific minerals.

Non-essential minerals:-

The minerals which are not significant for normal growth and development of an organisms are called non-essential are called non-essential minerals. These minerals do not take part in the structure and metabolic activities of the cell and their absence or deficiency does not produce any type of disorders.

In the living organisms the minerals occur in two forms

Types of minerals:-

(A) Animal minerals:-

In animal cells various kinds of essentials minerals are present, The essential minerals for animals can be divided into three categories according to the need of their quantity.

1.Major minerals:-

These minerals are required by organisms in comparatively large quantities. These minerals include calcium (Ca), magnesium (mg), Phosphorus (P), Sodium (Na), Chlorine (Cl), Potassium (K) and Sulphur (S).

2. Minor minerals:-

These minerals are required by organisms in comparatively small quantity. these minerals are also called trace minerals. They include iodine (I), Copper(Cu), Zinc (Zn), Cobalt (Co), Molybdenum (Mo), Iron (Fe), and manganese (Mn) .

3. Ultra trace minerals:-

Certain minerals are required by organisms in minute quantities. These minerals are called ultra trace minerals. They include cadmium (Cd), Silicon (Si), Aluminium (Ai) and Arsenic (Ar). These minerals if taken in excess are harmful to organisms.

(B) Plant minerals:-

In plant cells also various kinds of essential minerals are present which can be divided into two categories:-

1.macronutrients:-

These elements are required by plants comparatively in large quantity. They include carbon (C), Hydrogen (H), oxygen (O), Nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), Calcium (Ca), Sulphur (S), magnesium (Mg) and iron (Fe).

2. Micronutrients:-

These elements are requires by plants comparatively in large quantity. They include manganese(Mn), Zinc (Zn), Boron (B), Copper (Cu) and Molybdenum (Mo).
