Protein: function, source, requirement, deficiency :- The word protein by deviation means that it is of first importance. Proteins are complex organic nitrogenous compound and composed of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and sulphur in varing amount. Protein constitutes about 20% of the body weight in adult.
Polypeptide are made by polymerisation of amino acid through peptide bond. Big polypeptide chain contending more than 50 amino acid are called protein.
Function of protein
- Body Building
- Repair and maintenance
- Maintenance of osmotic pressure
- Synthesis of substance like antibodies hormones and coagulation factors.
Source of protein
Animal source :- milk, meat, eggs, cheese, fish
Vegetable source :- pulses, cereals, beans, nuts, oil and seeds.
In India cereal and pulses are the main source of protein as they are cheap easily available and consumed in milk.
Requirement of protein
ICMR Expert group suggest an intake of 1 gram of protein per kg of body weight for adult males and females assuming NPU of 65 for dietary protein
Deficiency of protein disease
Protein deficiency occurs along with energy deficiency hence called protein energy Malnutrition.
