Diphtheria : symptoms treatment and prevention :- diphtheria is an acute toxin mediated disease caused by toxigenic carynebacterium diphtheriae. It is a very contagious and potentially life threatening bacterial disease. It’s a localised infection disease which usually attacks the throat and nose mucous membrane.

Causative agent

Corynebacterium diphtheriae

Symptoms

There is fever with prostration characteristics patches of membranes appears on the tonsils pharynx and larynx

Transmission

The source of infection is cases for carrier. It is transmitted mainly by droplet infection.

Treatment

Acute cases are treated with diphtheria antitoxin at doses of 10000 to 50000 units.

Prevention and control

Prevention is why immunizations with the DPT. It must be given at 6th , 10th and 14th month of a child a booster dose is given at one and half years.
